Why Should I Own a Horse?

Horses are magnificent creatures – in so many ways. People often dream of owning their own horse. Perhaps you’ve driven by fields of horses and imagined what it would be like to have your own. Or maybe you’ve been taking lessons for a few years and are now considering the next step: ownership.

Horses are a big responsibility, and they do require a lot of care. However, if you are dedicated and have love to share, you should absolutely consider becoming a horse owner. The following are eight great reasons to make this dream a reality.

1. Horses Teach You About Yourself

Owning and caring for a horse will teach you so much about yourself as a person. When you show up to clean stalls on a chilly winter day, you’ll learn how dedicated you can be when you love another creature. When you spend weeks trying to teach your horse a new movement and it finally clicks, you’ll learn how rewarding it is to persevere through hardship.

Are you too passive? Interacting with your horse will reveal this. Maybe you come on very strong. A horse will reveal this to you, too. Take the lessons your horse teaches you and apply them to your everyday life, strengthening your relationships and growing in your understanding of yourself.

2. You Can Explore New Disciplines

If you have your own horse, it is often easier to try out different disciplines and styles of riding. Maybe you ride English, but you’ve been wanting to try Western riding. You can trailer your horse to a nearby stable that offers Western lessons and learn the basics. It’s easier to go trail riding, do some trick training, and take up other fun disciplines when you have your own horse as opposed to leasing or riding friends’ horses.

3. You’ll Get Plenty of Exercise

Exercise is so important for your physical and mental health. It can be tempting to just sit on the couch all day, but when you’re a horse owner, you’re much less likely to do so. You’ll get exercise riding your horse, but also when grooming, cleaning stalls, and setting up the ring. Being a horse owner makes for a healthier, more active lifestyle overall.

4. Horses Are Forgiving

Here’s the truth about horse ownership: you’ll make mistakes. You may choose a feed that your horse does not thrive on. You might neglect to call the vet, then realize your horse could have benefited from vet care.  Even the very best horse owners make mistakes sometimes. The important thing is that you’ll learn from them. And your horse will forgive you, so long as you do better in the future.

5. You’ll Meet Other Horse Lovers

It’s so rewarding to make friends who share your passion. When you’re a horse owner, it is easy to meet other people who love horses as much as you do. You might make some new friends at the boarding stable. Or, maybe you’ll take your horse to a clinic and make friends with some of the other participants. The best thing about horse friends is that you’ll always have something fun to do when you’re together: ride your horses!

6. You’ll Spend More Time Outside

Whether you’re riding down the trails or taking a lesson in a sand ring, owning a horse involves lots of time outside. There are so many benefits associated with spending more time outside. It helps relieve stress, enhances your ability to focus, and eases muscle tension. If you’ve been struggling with your mental health, spending time outside with your horse could be a good way to address that, naturally.

7. Horses Teach You Problem-Solving Skills

People who own horses are often excellent problem solvers. One day, you might find yourself figuring out how to repair a broken halter. The next day, you’re using baling twine to fix a feed back while you wait for a new one to ship. You’ll become a real MacGyver and channel creativity you didn’t even know you had.

8. Horse Offer Emotional Support

Everyone feels down in the dumps now and then. When you’re feeling low, your horse will offer you a shoulder to cry on. They are incredibly compassionate creatures. They can tell when you’re feeling low and respond by offering comfort and a quiet disposition. It’s so relaxing to know your horse will always be there for you.
